What Buy with Pro actually is
Launched in late 2024 and expanded through 2025 into 2026, Buy with Pro lets Perplexity Pro subscribers complete a purchase on select products directly inside Perplexity, without visiting the merchant's site. The Perplexity Merchant Program is the free enrollment path that gets a brand's product cards this checkout affordance instead of a plain click-out link - open to all Shopify merchants since January 2026, with 0 percent commission on orders that clear through PayPal checkout, per Perplexity's and Shopify's own published guidance reviewed 2026-09.
What genuinely does not exist yet
We looked for a merchant-facing pixel, SDK, or conversions API comparable to OpenAI's - something a merchant could install on their own site to independently confirm a Buy with Pro transaction. We did not find one in Perplexity's public merchant documentation as of 2026-09. What we found instead: guidance for merchants to set up a separate order tag or tracking parameter during onboarding specifically because Buy with Pro transactions do not appear in standard ecommerce analytics the way a direct site purchase does.
This is a real gap, stated as one. We are not implying Perplexity is behind on purpose or reading intent into a roadmap we cannot see. The honest fact is: no independently observable pixel exists yet, so "install the Perplexity pixel" is not currently an option to give a client.
How to measure it today, without a pixel
- Order-level tagging at onboarding - the mechanism Perplexity itself points merchants toward. Every Buy with Pro order should carry a distinguishing tag, source field, or SKU-level flag your own order-management system can filter on.
- A dedicated line in revenue reporting, separated from generic "direct" or "other" traffic the way any unattributed-but-identifiable channel deserves to be treated - not folded into a catch-all bucket where it disappears.
- Cohort-level comparison against your pre-enrollment baseline (average order value, return rate, repeat-purchase rate) as an indirect read on whether the channel is working, since per-order attribution is limited by the platform itself, not by your instrumentation.
- Watching for a pixel to ship. Every other commerce-enabled AI platform we reviewed for this series has moved toward a dedicated measurement layer within roughly a year of launching checkout. We expect Perplexity to follow - stated as our own inference, not a confirmed roadmap fact.
How this compares
| OpenAI (ChatGPT Ads) | Perplexity (Buy with Pro) | |
|---|---|---|
| Merchant-facing pixel | Yes - independently observed on the wire | Not found as of 2026-09 |
| Attribution mechanism | Pixel + Conversions API, pixel ID-based | Manual order tag / tracking parameter at onboarding |
| What "install tracking" means today | Install and verify the pixel and CAPI | Configure order tagging correctly in your own OMS |
We are not going to sell a merchant a "Perplexity pixel install" that does not exist. This page exists to tell you exactly what's real today and to build the order-tagging discipline that gets you the cleanest read available until a real pixel ships.
